It amazes me when people don’t believe I am in my 50’s. Why shouldn’t we look good at fifty, sixty and beyond? Age does not have to define us!
Here’s my real anti-aging secret. It’s not just great skincare but getting enough sleep and avoiding the sun on your face, hands, and neck. I wear a great sunblock with SPF 50, and a HUGH hat. Keep your health in check and be sure to take care of your mind, body and spirit. A daily meditation practice of your choice will help with stress and in your daily challenges you are facing. A few minutes of gentle breathing in and out will renew your inner spirit and quiet your nervous system. I call it re-booting my computer. As goes the cliché, “out with the old, in with the new.”
Napping is important if you are tired, but if you are not able to nap, a five-minute meditation is beneficial. Ask yourself if you are sleeping throughout the night. If not, there are many teas and supplements you could take to assistance you in establishing the necessary sleep.
I personally don’t like going to the gym, but prefer walking our three dogs twice daily with my husband as an alternative. I do mix walking with six days a week treadmill for more vigorous hiking on vacation; If time permits, Yoga a few times a week for exercise and strengthening. Find some sort of daily exercise you love and stick with it. As we get older, we don’t need to exercise hard but smart. There are many different yoga classes, water aerobics and fun exciting outings to try. I encourage you to check with the local venues in your area, and find a program that you can get excited about and stick with –for you.
I avoid almost all packaged and processed foods, often traveling with my own nuts, fruit, salad and containers for water. While great skincare is important, our skin is often a reflection of our diet. I drink very moderately and occasionally in my social circle. Everything in moderation is my motto. One of my gluten-free cowboy cookies and tea is a treat that I wouldn’t think of going without. If I am traveling or with friends and want to have a Mojito, a glass of wine, or a Skinny Margarita, I don’t deprive myself.
As a former model and part time actress, I know that less is more, especially as we grow older. Heavy foundation, too much eye shadow and too much blush will make you look older not younger. I love wearing less makeup as I get older. My daily makeup is mascara, a tiny bit of blush, lip-gloss and my tinted eyeglasses. If I am going out, I add a little eyeshadow and sometimes a lipstick -one shade darker. Sophisticatedly emphasis your assets. Dress in clothes that make you feel comfortable and beautiful. My “go to” look is my jeans, a flattering feminine blouse and flats. In the fall and winter, I stay with the season and bring out the boots. While traveling, I love the refined look of white shorts and linen pants. I pair them with fun t-shirts for tropical weather. I like to dress in clothes that make me feel feminine and sexy. At this point and time in my life, I try to do what makes me happy. Life is about choices. You can choose to be healthy and radiant at any age.
